About Baobab Oil

baobab-seeds.jpgOur baobab oil is an unrefined, cold-pressed oil made from the seeds of the baobab tree, which grows wild all over Africa. The Baobab tree (Adansonia digitata) is known as the “tree of life”or “upside down” tree because of the way its branches look like roots. It's as unusual looking as it is majestic to the eye.  Baobab trees are commonly known to live over 1000 years and are some of the largest, and most revered trees in sub-Saharan Africa.

Its real beauty, however, comes sealed inside its fuzzy capsule-like outer shell of the baobab fruit. The fruit of the Baobab tree is known as a “super fruit” because of the highly enriched vitamin content of its pulp which also translates to its little kidney shaped seeds. Before the oil can be squeezed from the seeds, they must be separated from the fruit pulp and cleaned thoroughly. We then cold press the seeds to make our wonderful baobab oil which is becoming a highly sought after ingredient in natural body care products.

Ojoba Collective unrefined Baobab Oil is a light golden color, fast absorbing, and has a light nutty scent. Cosmetic uses of the pure oil include bath oils, natural cosmetics, soaps, lotions, skin creams and high quality massage oils due to its excellent antioxidant and solvent free properties. Baobab oil contains Vitamins A, E and D3 (the sunshine vitamin!) and is rich in Omega 3, 6, 9 essential fatty acids, and sterols. It's high unsaponifiable value makes it great for soap making. Baobab oil is also prized for its stability against rancidity and long shelf life.

Ojoba Collective unrefined Baobab Oil is laboratory tested and is of the highest quality and purity. Each year our women’s cooperative of 300 seed collectors gather fruit during the few months the baobab fruit is ripe and ready for harvest, typically December-February. The dry fruit pulp is eaten or saved and the seeds extracted, cleaned, and dried for future baobab oil production.

Our baobab oil production facility is located in the same region as our shea manufacturing facility and is staffed by our 17 women who make up our Ojoba Women’s Baobab Cooperative.  Our hygienic facility and high quality oil pressing machinery allow us to produce beautiful, high quality, 100% pure unrefined oil perfect for the international marketplace and the natural cosmetics industry. We also have the capability to refine the oil for cosmetics use upon request.
