Shea butter has been treasured in West Africa for thousands of years for its healing properties. Local legend states that shea butter is used as a food and oil of the gods. For a millennia, shea butter has been used to treat a variety of skin problems including dry skin, rashes, burns and stretch marks. Shea butter even rejuvenates skin cells, protects against ultra-violet rays and has anti-inflammatory properties useful in the treatment of muscular aches and tension and sunburn. If the term “wonder cream” could be used for a skin moisturizer, unrefined shea butter deserves the title.

Shea butter is derived from the kernels found inside the fruit of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa). Shea trees are native to Africa and grow wild in a 3,500 mile-wide savannah zone . The trees grow 55-60 feet and once every year the tree produces fruits that are harvested during the rainy season. Subsequently, the kernels are collected and then sun-dried to begin the shea butter production process. Click here to see our Shea Production Process.

ALL SHEA BUTTER PRODUCTS ARE NOT THE SAME QUALITY!
With so many shea butter body products on the market today, it can be baffling to choose the best product. While it may be true that all shea butters can moisturize the skin to some degree, it is important to know that only fresh, good quality unrefined shea butter will have all the naturally occurring nutrients to heal and rejuvenate the skin. Shea butter bereft of its natural healing properties is simply another generic moisturizing oil, and not worth the premium price that is charged for the name.
Traditional shea butter is a handcrafted product, and like anything handmade, will exhibit slight variations in color and texture from one batch to another. In our modern, mass-produced, cookie-cutter world, many cosmetics manufacturers are not willing to work with this artisanal shea butter. They prefer to work with a chemically refined shea butter that is purely white, scent-free, has a multi-year shelf-life, and unfortunately, no longer retains any of the natural healing properties that has made shea butter so prized in the cosmetics world.
Even unrefined shea butters are not all the same quality. A good quality shea butter starts with good quality kernels. If the kernels are old, improperly dried, fermented, or of poor quality, then the finished shea butter will not be of good quality. In addition, unrefined shea butter has a shelf life of one to two years. The healing properties inherent in unrefined shea butter gradually diminish as the shea butter ages. Re-heating is another factor that affects the healing properties of shea butter. Every time that it is reheated (i.e. to add scents or to mix with other ingredients) some of its healing properties will be lost. If it is heated to a high temperature, then all of the healing properties will be lost. |

We at Ojoba Collective take great pride in offering only fresh, unrefined, high-quality, traditionally processed shea butter. We believe that our customers would rather receive a handmade product with some minor variations in color and texture, as long as all the natural healing properties are intact, rather than a shea butter that looks “factory-perfect,” but lacks any real healing power.
We guarantee that our butter is fresh, 100% pure and natural, and of the highest quality starting with the kernels. The region where our shea butter is produced (Upper East region of Ghana) is known to produce some of the best quality shea kernels around. This is truly a product that is good for the planet, good for poverty alleviation in West Africa, and great for your skin!!
